Our Additional Studies for Trainee Teachers: Recognising, Contextualising and Confidently Addressing Antisemitism

Then our ZABUS additional studies offer you exactly that: opportunities for open discussion, interactive learning formats and the chance to engage with antisemitism in a well-informed way. Here, you’ll gain a deep understanding of its complex mechanisms and develop practical skills for your studies, your career and everyday life.
The ZABUS additional studies are specifically aimed at committed teacher training students at the University of Würzburg who wish to enhance their studies with a qualification of particular social relevance.

Structure of the Additional Studies
Overall, the ZABUS additional studies are divided into three engaging modules, in which you will gradually achieve the six qualification goals that will help you to critically examine antisemitism, gain a sound understanding of it, identify it with confidence, and tackle it effectively in both school and everyday social contexts.

Form of assessment: Written exam (60 mins)
Assessment: Passed/Failed (B/NB)
This module provides students with a sound understanding of the manifestations, definitions and mechanisms of antisemitism. Alongside an interdisciplinary examination of key concepts and empirical findings from research into antisemitism, particular emphasis is placed on distinguishing it from other forms of discrimination, such as racism. Reflection on psychosocial and societal contexts, as well as the pedagogical adaptation of the content for the school setting, form central components of the module. In addition, various aspects of Jewish life are presented to promote a comprehensive understanding.

This module provides practice-oriented didactic and pedagogical approaches to combating antisemitism in a school context. Building on the knowledge acquired in the foundation module, it offers an in-depth examination of areas of action, prevention strategies and areas of tension in education aimed at combating antisemitism. The seminar places particular emphasis on the application of theoretical concepts, whilst the accompanying practical session involves testing and reflecting on practical methods and approaches for use in schools.

This module focuses on the practical adaptation and further development of educational strategies critical of antisemitism in the context of digital education. A key focus is on the analysis of digital platforms and their potential to either support or hinder education critical of antisemitism. The module promotes the development of a reflective professional ethos critical of antisemitism and prepares students for the pedagogical challenges in the digital space.
1. Fundamentals of Research into Antisemitism
You will gain an understanding of the key principles of research into antisemitism – from important concepts and manifestations to the latest studies – and learn how to present this knowledge in the classroom in a way that is clear and appropriate for your audience.
Due to the current travel advisory, Erasmus placements at the University of Haifa in Israel are unfortunately not possible at present. We’ll provide further information as soon as this changes!

The additional studies “The Certificate in Critical Education on Antisemitism for Teaching (ZABUS)” is aimed exclusively at teacher training students at the University of Würzburg. To be eligible, you must be in at least your second academic semester.
The additional studies start every year in the winter term. The modules are offerend on Thursdays from 6.00 pm to 8.00 pm.
Yes, there is a new application round for each winter term. Current information on the application deadlines will be published on the homepage (probably in July 2026).
Recognition is possible under certain conditions. Please contact Judith Petzke with the relevant evidence to check the individual possibilities.
Notifications are sent out depending on the number of applications received. As a rule, you will receive feedback shortly after the application deadline so that you can plan your term in good time.
The standard period of study is three semesters, in which you can complete modules 1–3. However, the actual duration depends on your individual study and examination load. We recommend that you consult with the student counsellor Judith Petzke if necessary.
This is only possible if you are able to have your previous achievements recognised. It is not possible to complete a degree within one semester without the corresponding prior achievements.
The university certificate offers you the opportunity to formally demonstrate your studies in critical education on antisemitism for Teaching. This qualification may be useful in relation to future teaching posts in the civil service, as well as for applications to schools abroad or non-school institutions.
Yes, in principle every application submitted will be considered. However, if the number of applications exceeds the number of places available, the selection will be made in accordance with the requirements of the study and examination regulations. As a rule, a solution procedure is used in such cases.
The seminar "Ethical and anthropological argumentation patterns in critical education on antisemitism" is also offered every semester for students who are not enrolled in the ZABUS additional studies. This seminar is a reduced version of the entire additional studies.
ZABUS seminars are generally only offered to students on the additional studies. In exceptional cases, places may be allocated within the free area if capacity is still available. If you are interested in participating as part of a BA or MA programme, please contact us at zabus@uni-wuerzburg.de.
